Last week another United passenger, already in his seat‐First Class, full-fare, for what that's worth ‐was threatened with violence‐"being removed in handcuffs" is violence‐unless he gave up his seat for a higher-priority passenger.

The Chicago incident wasn't one rogue ground crew. Of course not. It never is. This is United company policy. United allows you to stay in your seat only if nobody more important wants it. Somebody thought that was a good idea, and passed the policy down the chain.

In our new authoritarian state and mindset, people are defending United's and the Chicago Police's actions, because nobody would have gotten hurt if they just did what they were told to do. According to a family statement late in the afternoon (I'm really sorry, all I have is this tweet containing a screenshot), the Chicago passenger, Dr. David Dao, is currently in hospital being treated for his injuries.

I hope nobody at United ever sees one of those woodcuts of a slave ship during the Middle Passage, they'll think it's aspirational.

Of course. Just like if you care about privacy, you must have something to hide.

Feh.

This is the truly scary part, regular people defending corporations and police who brutalize passengers who stand up for themselves.

Actually, I haven't seen hardly anyone defend United, even in comment sections. They've been overwhelming 'Not flying UAL again,' 'That CEO is an asshole', etc. I think there were over 6K comments on the Times article and only one upticked 'if he only followed the rules' comment.

Damn, that sucks. I've been following the story hard because my family travels a lot, and my dad is the kind who would refuse to move. The sites I've look at, including a bunch of business news websites, have all been pretty strongly anti-United. A LOT of them have mentions of canceling the corporate account with United and switching to another airline.

I also just saw a Facebook ad for Southwest that said: We beat the competition. We don't beat you.

Which kind of sums it up for me. There have been some (bitter) folks in the business comments who say they think consumers will forget this in a week or so, but I don't think so. This has too much juice, the doctor's face is too appalling/shocking. And it's taken on enormous legs in Asia.

HUGE HUGE LEGS in Asia, holy crap. I mean Chinese media loves any opportunity to go "look how terrible the US is!" so with all the extra shiny stuff, THIS has gone like crazy.

Wow, if they treat First Class passengers this way, uncompliant Economy passengers must be kicked into the fuselage. I'm sorry, they're reaccomidated to the fuselage.
