Jack Weatherford's Ghengis Khan and the Making of the Modern World and The Secret History of the Mongol Queens. I read them together with Tuchman's A Distant Mirror several years ago, and it's amazing how the Mongols had dealt with logistics problems that baffled the French a century later.
