You don't actually need a lot of pockets to hold an ipad mini and a small notepads. Non-pretentious idiots who are not trying to attract attention, and who do not want to carry a bag, could manage it with cargo pants, or the non-fitted kind of rain jacket they used to make for hikers.

Or, with *very* careful attention to pocket detail, a wool blazer. I have two such. They aren't the most fashionable jackets in the world--one is a rather large plaid--but they're a lot better than wearing a lab coat to a restaurant.
