I have nary a clue. Based on my memory alone -and I haven't seen all that many photos of stockings- if you don't count stripes, stockings with colorwork come along way late (~late 19c); single-color stitchwork stuff like lace comes along earlier.
There's a Ravelry group on historic knitting. (historic-knitting). I'm combing through their archives but haven't seen anything.
