I turned sixty this year. I won't say I'm the same person as at (say) thirty-five; I'm bitterer, less hopeful, and of course disabled. But the fun-having part of me is pretty much the same. I get seriously involved in fun things, until the fun wears off or I get anxious about not doing them right. (Ask me about knitting.) Sometimes, when I'm lucky, I do them forever.

The strangest thing about being old is the way some younger people react to my very existence in fandom and gaming spaces. Some are creeped out. Some applaud me for my ... daring originality? If you play Don't Starve Together, yesterday I was called "Our very own Wickerbottom!" (Yes, I am a Wickerbottom main. She's a librarian. Duh.)

I've heard the first gen fanzine writers complain about the very same thing. When a hobby has been active for forty-plus years, dating slash to Leslie Fish, then you're going to have people who are fifty-plus (at least) years old doing it. Home videogaming is also forty-plus years old, and the same applies.

Does anybody remember an SF story called something like "Grandma Won't Rock", about somebody assuming their grandmother ought to be doing grandmotherly things? I feel like that.

I got reminded on Thursday evening that I was overdue for a fic exchange and answered blankly that I hadn't signed up for it.

Turned out I had. Thanks, Lyrica!! I promised the fic for Saturday, cobbled together a start Friday, padded it out and polished the next day, and put that puppy up on AO3, supported by lots of handholding and beta from [personal profile] othercat . This fic was not so much finished as abandoned (h/t Marianne Moore).

It currently has 125 hits and 20 kudos. I have never had a ratio this good on a fic so early in its life. Stuff I have slaved over, admiring every line, has gone down into the darkness, but this little throwaway has found love. It's in a juggernaut fandom, Homestuck, but I've written Homestuck fics before.

Everybody always says that how excited you are about a piece of writing and how excited the audience is don't necessarily correlate, but I hadn't seen it in action quite so forcefully. Need to remember this going forward.

Because otherwise people will ask in the comments, I'm linking.

round and round and round in the circle game Homestuck, John/Roxy, John/Terezi, fluff.

For all two of my followers who read Homestuck... "Ain't We Got Fun" is a look at the lives of the four Beta Kids in New York State during the 1920s. Rose and Dave live in Manhattan, John and Jade in the small northernmost town of Massena. They correspond through the Spring of 1924.

Dearest Jade,
I trust this finds you, and John of course, in your usual frighteningly robust health. I also trust that you are exercising some care in just how you make use of that health. "Trust" is in fact putting it strongly; "pray" might be nearer the mark.

This was for HorribleThing, who asked "Historical AU! I don't care what time period, as long as there are attempts at accuracy! Although I will admit a fondness for a focus on relationships between women when it comes to other time periods, so some extra attention to Rose/Jade would be lovely!" I had more fun than should be legal doing the research.

e: Whoops, forgot link!

I wound up writing one treat and one last-minute pinch hit.

The treat was pallida ora semper fame, for Naraht, based on Mary Renault's Return to Night. It began as a Five Things... fic but morphed into an unholy mash-up of  Renault, mantisfuck consentworld, and TED talks. I owe a great debt of thanks to spock, whose enthusiastic collaboration made the TED talk much, much worse, and to Llwyden for coming up with the Old English for "woman-insect" ("wyfbítel", if you're wondering.)

The pinch-hit was Out of the Dead Land, for Person, based on the video game Dangan Ronpa.  Dangan Ronpa, for those of you who don't know it, is an extremely cracky Japanese mystery game, originally for the Playstation Vita, which was never translated for the U.S. market.  Then orenronen, at SomethingAwful, did an absolutely magnificent English-language Let's Play, and suddenly -- thanks to their excellent and idiomatic translation -- it became a fandom.  Within a year, the original developers committed to a translation and a port.    Anyway, Dangan Ronpa is a game in which a bunch of teenagers are locked into a high school, they can escape only by killing another player and getting away with the murder.   This fic explores one of the bad endings, and contains spoilers for some of the previous murders.

Thank you to my wonderful authors, and may 2015 be full of good things to read and to eat!
