The abbot of the Franciscan monastery in question is the hero's uncle, a Scot. It appears to be a French abbey: it's the 12th-century Abbey of Ste. Anne de Beaupré. (Which is, by the way, a Canadian basilica; it's "Ste. Anne" de Beaupré (the name of the Canadian settlement), not "Ste. Anne de Beaupré".)
They don't appear to be taking enclosure very seriously; the heroine roams hither and thither, including at one point making steamy love with her husband in the underground hot springs.
