Jason Whitlock of ESPN responds to the video documentation of abuse that had been completely documented in print. Some highlights:

I thought the full video would explain why: Why police originally charged Ray and Janay with simple assault. Why the prosecutor allowed Ray to enter a diversion program. Why Janay apologized for her role. Why Janay chose to marry Ray. Why the Ravens enthusiastically supported Rice and used their facilities in helping him rehabilitate his image. Why Goodell suspended Rice for only two games.

I wrongly and naively thought that she was the aggressor in the attack, that Rice reflexively shoved her to fend her off and she slipped, fell and hit her head.

I did not think sexism could manifest itself this brazenly in 2014. Clearly, I was wrong. Clearly, as it relates to domestic violence and sexism, America has made far less progress than I thought.

That is not a complaint. I'm a sports columnist who specializes in social commentary. I want these topics explored. As an American citizen and a sports fan, I'm concerned about our culture and sports' positive and negative impact on our culture.

I read about this in the Guardian earlier today. It's bizarre - the video shows him assaulting her and he got away with it. It's a level of unreal that has the moon made of green cheese.

....it's sad that despite the fucking ridiculous here, I am relieved that he admitted he was wrong at all. *sigh*

What I'm most burned up about is that any given instance of domestic violence is going to be disturbing and violent, but because the vast majority of them aren't on tape, people are going to keep minimizing, and keep pushing them under the rug. (As witnessed by Mr. Whitlock.) Mrg.

(And I don't think Ray Rice warrants harsher suspension than any other given person who does this sort of thing, but because of the visible nature of it, he'll get that.)

I am more and more these days in love with the phrase:

A guy who, from the sound of it was starting at step zero, is saying publically that he was wrong and sexism does exist and this is a problem. You can see the steps forward he's taking. More than that, he's not just realised individuals are sexist, he's seeing the institutionalised sexism. This is progress. It's easy to laugh at him, but this is actually a really hopeful thing.

I hope he manages to take the next step.

And if Whitlock, the Whitlock prior to this article, or the one after his recanting slash apology slash self professed cometoJesus moment here, or both.
