Holy shit, I woke up to rain. In the middle of June. In the middle of a drought. This is a thing that Does Not Happen around here.
I have just discovered late Warren Zevon, and HMOG is this my thing. I only knew Zevon from "Werewolves of London", which the drunks in my dorm used to play out their windows and howl along with. This did not inspire confidence. For some reason (I think I was following YouTube suggestions, but I'm not sure) I ran across "The Wind" and "Life'll Kill Ya", and I've been playing them nonstop for days. Zevon hits my biggest kink, intelligent lyrics, with a side of the folk-rock and blues-rock I loved in my twenties. "My Shit's Fucked Up" is a remarkable combination of foul language (duh), a beautiful melody, gorgeous fingerpicking, and acceptance. That's what I'm getting from late Zevon: an acknowledgement of sin and damage, rueful acceptance, and rock. I love it. I need to go buy "My Ride's Here". Meanwhile, like my college enemies, I'll be playing Zevon over and over.
Don't let us get sick,
Don't let us get old,
Don't let us get stupid, all right?
Just make us be brave
And make us play nice
And let us be together tonight.
