I cannot believe what just happened. I called my mom in the nursing home. A nurse went to get her. She was so excited she jumped out of bed. She fell. It now hurts when she moves her leg. She's being taken in for X-rays.

More as I know it. As you all know, this is one of the commonest ways for old people to break hips. Which would suck.

I'm sorry to hear that. Crossing fingers for best possible outcome.

I hope she's OK! (After all, anybody's leg hurts after a fall.) And since one reasons breaking a hip is such a terrible injury is that it often triggers a need to move to a nursing home...well, she doesn't have to move to a nursing home, she lives in one.

That said, if she has to be hospitalized, it's important that she be admitted to the hospital instead of placed on observation status, and that she stay in the hospital for at least three days in case she needs to go to a skilled nursing facility for rehab. (Both these things affect Medicare reimbursement.) You might have to do a lot of yelling for the nursing home to take her back after the hospital and SNF, but there are clear rights to "bed holds" in these situations.

I am sad that this happened---but she's in a stable, safe care situation already, so she wasn't alone! I hope it is only bruising or a strain, but tiny chips and fractures are so common and hurt as much as the big ones.

I hope it is the least exciting outcome possible.
