The Washington Post has announced their new "experimental, visually-driven product"> aimed at millennial women, The Lily.

When I think of the symbolism of lilies, I think of the Aesthetics -- "Though the Philistines may jostle, you will rank as an apostle in the high aesthetic band, If you walk down Piccadilly with a poppy or a lily in your medieval hand" -- something Wilde actually did IIRC. I also think of Victorian purity culture, with the untouched lily contrasted with the full-blown rose. I think of Georgia O'Keefe, no clarification necessary. I think of Leonard Cohen -- "In the cave at the tip of the lily".

In short, it's both weirdly old-fashioned and weirdly pornographic. As, I suppose, am I.

In other great news, The Lily is only available on Medium, Facebook and Instagram.

No, but close. Amelia Bloomer's, started in 1849. (Didn't last long, but it was A First.)

And when I think of the symbolism of the lily the first thing which springs to mind is the Easter uprising and people wearing little paper lily badges at IRA furneals. Probably not what the Washington Post intended.

This particular millennial woman is more interested in the WaPo's political reporting than any visual driven ... product. (What is that even.)

(I've even considered subscribing, which is wild. I've never subscribed to a newspaper before!)

I subscribed in October, because David Fahrenthold's reporting on Trump's donations was dynamite. I'm really enjoying the whole paper, much more than I enjoy the NYT nowadays. (We still have a subscription because my husband likes the crosswords and the Sunday morning ritual.)

In a sane world, Fahrenthold's reporting would have sunk Trump's campaign. Sadly, we don't live in one of those. I like WaPo more than the NYT too (although the NYT crossword will always been my fave -- although I fill those out when I'm bored at work.)
